Gordon Banks’ save against Pele is the most remarkable of all time, says Bob Wilson
Gordon Banks famous save against Pele at the 1970 World Cup has been described as the most remarkable of all time by former Arsenal goalkeeper and close friend Bob Wilson. It was announced on Tuesday morning thatEngland legend Banks had passed away peacefully overnight at the age of 81.RIP Gordon Banks: 1937-20193
RIP Gordon Banks: 1937-2019
Tributes to the late, great goalkeeper have poured in all morning, and Wilson joined talkSPORT to pay his own special tribute to his old friend. He said, like a whole generation of fans, the World Cup winner was one of his biggest childhood heroes and he will go down in history as Englands greatest ever goalkeeper.Speaking to Max Rushden, the ex-Arsenal man said: I was born in Chesterfield, where Banksy first played, and I used to go and stand behind his goal as an aspiring young goalie and study this lad who seemed to have springs in his heels. He had this natural gymnastic ability. He had this ability, even though he wasnt the tallest goalkeeper, to fill the goal and make extraordinary and remarkable saves. In later life I said to him: I thought you were a little bit flash in your early days, Gordon. And he replied: Well, you have to entertain the crowd, Bob!He will remain the greatest England goalkeeper ever, probably until England win the World Cup again.

  • David Seaman: He was a true gentleman
  • Gascoigne, Sterling and Hurst among many to pay tribute to Gordon Banks

Banks will arguably be remembered more for one save than for his World Cup-winning heroics for England in 1966, his six FIFA World Goalkeeper of Year awards or his two League Cup wins with Leicester City and Stoke City. That save came in Mexico in 1970, in a World Cup group stage game against Brazil, where he thwarted one of the games most famous stars Pele.Wilson admits he has analysed that stop about a million times, and believes it is the greatest save ever made in the history of football.Banks’ famous save in 1970 will forever go down in history3

He explained: I was in Gordons company about six months ago in London and we talked about THE save, the extraordinary save where he got from one side of his goal to the other to save Peles header.Pele was already shouting GOL! and Alan Mullery, who was beaten by Pele in the air, went up to Banksy and said: Why didnt you catch it?Its my favourite ever save. What made it so different, its not just a phenomenal reflex save, its not just a take your chance, throw your body over and hope to get in the way of it.When the ball was pulled back from the goal line, because it was about to go out for a corner, Bansky was actually a yard outside his near post facing the full-back who was about the cross the ball to Pele.Ive analysed this a million times, he then has about nine yards to cover. He covered about four and a half yards with his feet, and by that moment Pele is already heading it. The fortunate thing for Banksy is that he headed into the ground and not straight at the goal. But by then Banksy is only half way across his goal and then hes dived backwards, and it was like an equal and opposite reaction with his arm – as the ball just came up off the ground to enter the net, Bansky has got to it and conjured the ball over.It remains the most remarkable save of all time and it will be shown hundreds of times today, as it should be.Here was a guy who set new standards and who was, on and off the field, an absolute legend and a wonderful human being. He was the most amazing man and I am so sad today.3
