Manchester United have been warned about giving too much power to Paul Pogba, following reports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to make the midfielder his club captain.Red Devils chiefs are reportedly willing to give the Frenchman the captaincy, which he briefly held in a back-up capacity last season before it was stripped from him by Jose Mourinho, in a bid to convince him to stay at Old Trafford this summer.But Danny Mills has compared giving Pogba the armband to when David Beckham was captain of the England team, and believes it could have a negative effect on the United dressing room.Getty3

Former Leeds defender Mills told talkSPORT Becks used his power as skipper to dictate where the team trained, what time they trained, and even where they ate.He said it eventually rubbed a number of senior Three Lions players the wrong way, and that manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and the Football Association perhaps gave the superstar too much power over the teams affairs.And he has advised United not to make the same mistake with Pogba.Speaking to Sam Matterface on Drivetime, Mills said: How much power do you give one person?Commercially for England and the FA, David Beckham was absolutely huge, but it becomes an issue when he starts to dictate when you train, what restaurants you go to, when you eat, what you do, the times of training. Sven and the FA allowed him that power. Matterface: He dictated where and what time you trained?Mills: Yeah, and when we ate. If he had something on he would have a meeting with Sven and say: Can we just tweak it slightly and do this slightly differently?And Sven was very amenable in that way: Yes David, no problem.Matterface: What if you wanted to move a training session?Mills: Oh, he didnt speak to me!Matterface: So what did that do for morale?getty3

Mills: Well, for some of the more senior players there was a little bit of an issue. It was fine to start with, because he was captain and thats OK, but there was a point where clearly Sven and the FA had given him a little bit too much power to start dictating things.We had senior players in that dressing room, the likes of David Seaman, Martin Keown, Teddy Sheringham, Paul Scholes, Michael Owen and there was a bit of a tipping point, like… hang on a minute.It wasnt David Beckhams fault. He is already the pin-up boy for Manchester United; hes on all the posters, he is what sells, he is the main reason why they have got a lot of these commercial contracts and brings a lot of money into the club.If you start giving him even more power and give him captaincy, his attitude is not the greatest and weve seen this season that he can down tools at times. His attitude is not always spot on.I just think its a very slippery slope to go down.
